Cosmetic Procedures That Keep Aging Smiles Looking Great

    Last updated 3 days ago

The natural aging process has a direct effect on the condition of your teeth. Over time, acid erosion eats away at the enamel of your teeth, increasing your risk of tooth decay, chips, fractures, and periodontal disease. Your teeth also suffer from discoloration and mechanical wear and tear as you grow older. Read on for more information on cosmetic dentistry procedures that can keep your smile looking great even as you age.

    Teeth Whitening

Tooth discoloration is the result of aging and the consumption of certain foods and beverages. Dark colas, coffee, teas, red wine, soy sauce, balsamic vinegar, tomato sauce, and dark-colored fruits and vegetables can all increase tooth discoloration. Fortunately, many top dentists provide in-office power bleaching in conjunction with at-home whitening trays to help revitalize your smile.

    Porcelain Veneers

Porcelain veneers are a great option for individuals with extremely discolored, worn down, chipped, or broken teeth. These thin, custom-made chips of porcelain are applied to the front of the tooth and can improve the look of your teeth without removing a large portion of your existing tooth structure.

    Bonding Procedures

Similar to porcelain veneers, bonding procedures involve the application of tooth-colored materials to the teeth using a semi-permanent adhesive. Bonding procedures allow your cosmetic dentist to repair chips and cracks, fill spaces between teeth, and change the color of your teeth.

    Dental Implants

When you have lost teeth due to extreme tooth decay or periodontal disease it may be time to consider dental implants. Dental implants utilize a titanium rod to replace your natural tooth roots. These rods are placed within the jawbone and are attached to a crown or bridge for a natural-looking appearance.

Whether you’re interested in implant dentistry, tooth whitening procedures, or porcelain veneers, Dr. Jeffrey Shapiro is here to help. For more information on your cosmetic dentistry treatment options, contact our New York City office at (888) 691-5469.

How Does Invisalign Work to Straighten Your Smile?

    Last updated 8 days ago

While traditional metal braces can help to correct a number of malocclusions, most of us would prefer a less noticeable treatment option. Fortunately, a number of cosmetic dentists offer the Invisalign system as an alternative to conventional orthodontic services.

    What is the Invisalign System?

The Invisalign system offers a unique approach to orthodontic treatment. Unlike traditional metal braces, the Invisalign system utilizes a series of clear, smooth, removable aligners to gradually straighten your teeth. Invisalign offers a much more comfortable treatment option as they eliminate the need for brackets and painful archwires. Because the Invisalign aligners are removable they allow for proper brushing and flossing habits—ultimately reducing the risk of tooth decay and periodontal disease.

    Ideal Candidates

Invisalign can be used to correct a wide array of oral malocclusions or “bad bites.”  Invisalign may be right for you if you are suffering from:

    • Crowded teeth.
    • Gaps or spacing between teeth.
    • An overbite, in which the front teeth extend past the lower teeth.
    • An underbite, in which the lower teeth extend further than the front teeth.
    • A crossbite, a condition in which the upper and lower jaws are improperly aligned.

    Treatment Process

After taking a series of x-rays and impressions of your teeth, your cosmetic dentist will create a three-dimensional digital image of your teeth that will be used to create a customized treatment plan mapping out the progressive movements of your teeth. This treatment plan is then used to create a series of customized clear aligners using BPA-free plastic. Patients are advised to wear each aligner for 20 to 22 hours per day for approximately two weeks before changing to the next aligner in the series.

The best way to determine if the Invisalign system is right for you is to consult with your cosmetic dentist. Why Do Teeth Darken?

    Last updated 9 days ago

One of the most common reasons individuals visit their cosmetic dentist is to seek treatment for tooth staining and discoloration.

This video clip from the American Dental Association provides a brief overview on the leading causes of tooth discoloration. Your teeth may lose their luster and white appearance due to certain medications, smoking or tobacco use, and consuming dark foods or drinks. However, your teeth may also darken as you age due to the deterioration of the enamel that causes the dark tissue beneath to be revealed. Check out this full video for more information.
